Ohtani might pitch and hit … but Morii pitches, hits AND plays the field. The 19-year-old A’s prospect is the new Shotime.
Morii is headed to Single-A, where the plan for him is to hit and pitch for the first time. But unlike Ohtani, who is the designated hitter when he’s not pitching for the Dodgers, Morii is going to play second base on days he’s not on the mound (with some DH duty mixed in).
OK, OK, we’ll give Shohei his flowers. Ohtani has also played the outfield before. He made seven appearances in left and right field with the Angels in 2021, and he occasionally played the outfield in Japan. So he’s done it all, too.
But the future is Morii! We’re just happy the A’s are trying to develop him as a three-way player.
Morii signed with the A’s last January for just over $1.5 million, the largest bonus ever for a Japanese amateur player outside of Nippon Professional Baseball.
Until now, he was only hitting in games, but it’s time to unleash the full Morii experience.
Here’s the plan: Morii will make his debut for Single-A Stockton today as the DH. On Thursday, he’ll pitch the first game of his pro career. On Saturday, he’ll play second base. And on Sunday, he’ll be back at DH.
Morii is scheduled to pitch on Thursdays, with off-days on Fridays for recovery. Then he’ll hit and play the field in the games around that.
Aaron Ashby’s teammates are starting to call him “The Vulture,” and for good reason.
Ashby is leading MLB in wins right now … and he’s a relief pitcher.
The Brewers lefty is a perfect 7-0 this season. That’s one more win than Chris Sale and José Soriano for the top spot on the league leaderboard.
We’re a quarter of the way into the season, too. That’s pretty darn late for a reliever to be leading the Majors in wins.
And if Ashby somehow kept up this improbable streak of vulturing wins, he’d make some crazy history. Let our Brewers reporter, Adam McCalvy, put Ashby’s season into context for you:
• No true full-time reliever — let’s say, any pitcher who’s making at least 80% of his appearances in relief — has ever led MLB in wins.
• Of all the pitchers who have led the Majors in wins in the Modern Era (since 1900), the most reliever-ish among them was the Cardinals’ Ernie Broglio, who tied Warren Spahn for the MLB lead with 21 wins in 1960. Broglio made 28 relief appearances and 24 starts that year.
• Even the true king of relief wins, Elroy Face — the so-called “Baron of the Bullpen” — never led the league. But he came close. Face went 18-1 for the 1959 Pirates without making a single start. That is the modern single-season record for wins in relief.
• The original “Vulture” was Phil Regan, who was given the nickname by none other than Sandy Koufax when Regan went 14-1 as a reliever for the 1966 Dodgers.
• Ashby is even following in the footsteps of a recent Brewers vulture: Brent Suter, who went 12-5 as a reliever for Milwaukee in 2021 and reluctantly embraced the moniker as the season went on, as he started wearing a T-shirt bearing the image of the bird.

DON’T LET THE PHILLIES GET HOT
The Red Sox are hosting the Phillies starting tonight in a rare battle of interim managers: Chad Tracy for Boston, Don Mattingly for Philadelphia.
The Phillies have been extra hot so far. They’re 10-3 under Donnie Baseball. And it’s pretty simple how they’re doing it: Their stars are showing up.
• Kyle Schwarber is leading the National League with 16 home runs and is tied for the MLB lead with Aaron Judge. He’s homered in four straight games entering the series vs. the Sox.
• Bryce Harper is top-10 in the Majors and sixth-best in the NL with a .938 OPS. Harper and Schwarber (.950 OPS) are one of two teammate duos in the top 10 in the Majors in OPS, along with Judge and Ben Rice for the Yankees.
• Cristopher Sánchez has a 20 2/3-inning scoreless streak, the longest active streak for any Major League starter. It has been years in the making, but Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) is now positioned to accelerate revenue and sustain high-level growth for years as it becomes the spokes to NVIDIA’s (NASDAQ: NVDA) hub. NVIDIA’s GPUs and AI infrastructure offer many advantages and will continue to drive AI. However, Advanced Micro Devices’ GPUs, specifically the MI450 line scheduled for launch this year, also offer advantages that are changing the AI landscape.
NVIDIA has the first-mover advantage and strong positioning, as its stack was well developed before the AI boom and is best suited for high-power, rapid model training and the proliferation of AI.
Disadvantages of NVIDIA’s products include cost, operating expense, and utility across workloads, factors where MI450s and Helios rack-scale systems excel. Advanced Micro Devices is well positioned to benefit from NVIDIA’s dominance in AI training, as a single NVIDIA AI factory can produce enough AI models to support many AMD-based inference centers.
In this world, NVIDIA’s revenue growth could easily be outperformed, and there is evidence that the shift is already underway. Hyperscalers, including Oracle (NASDAQ: ORCL), Meta (NASDAQ: META), OpenAI, Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), and Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL), have either committed to Advanced Micro Devices’ products, expecting deployments to begin in Q3 this year, or are preparing for that possibility by planning smooth systems integration. The common denominators are choice, cost, and purpose, as these systems are blended into an integrated ecosystem capable of massive inference.
AMD Rockets Higher: Business Is Good for Training and Inference
Advanced Micro Devices’ Q1 earnings results were a blowout, with revenue growth accelerating to 37.8% and outperforming the consensus estimate by more than 300 basis points. Strength was seen in both CPUs and GPUs, affirming the strength foreshadowed by Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) and driven by broad-based demand. The key takeaway is that AMD is well positioned not only to deliver GPUs, but also the much-needed CPUs that help drive AI workloads across use cases. The Data Center segment led, up more than 50%, followed by a 23% increase in Client & Gaming and a 6% gain in Embedded.
Margins were another area of strength. The company experienced margin pressure but managed it well, producing $1.5 billion in GAAP operating income, $2.5 billion in adjusted operating income, and $1.37 in adjusted earnings per share (EPS). Adjusted EPS was up 185% compared to the prior year, outpacing consensus by more than 600 basis points, and is expected to remain strong in the upcoming quarters.
Guidance was strong, and that may be understating it. Typically cautious, Lisa Su said growth will accelerate meaningfully in the coming quarters, forecasting high-single-digit sequential growth in Q2, an acceleration to 46% year over year, and continued strength. MI450 and Helios will be catalysts in the upcoming quarters, driving considerable strength, as she also said customer engagement exceeds company expectations. Looking ahead, Su also increased the long-term target, doubling her view of the CPU addressable market to $120 billion.
Advanced Micro Devices Valuation Is Way Out of Whack: Significant Upside Expected
It may take time, but Advanced Micro Devices’ revenue is on track to approach or exceed NVIDIA’s within the next few years. The company’s forward-looking estimates appear too low, and even the consensus as of early May suggests considerable upside is available. Compared with NVIDIA, which trades at an approximate $4.75 trillion market cap, AMD’s $570 billion is a drop in the bucket, setting the stage for a 500% to 600% increase in the stock price over time.
The analyst response to the report has been robust, with numerous commentaries highlighting the strength and outlook, the agentic AI tailwind, and the upcoming MI450 launch. As it stands, MarketBeat tracks 41 analysts with ratings; they provide an 80% Buy-side bias, no analyst rates the stock a Sell, and the price target trend is positive. The price action is roughly aligned with the consensus figure, but high-end targets remain attractive, with Rosenblatt setting a new high of $490. That high-end target represents 35% upside from the pre-release closing price and is unlikely to be the end of this trend.
The price action is mind-blowing, given the April advance. AMD’s price surged 20% in after-hours and pre-opening trading, setting a fresh high near $420. The move was driven in part by options activity, so further volatility is expected.
Chasing the stock higher is risky, as whipsaws and outsized moves are likely. Critical support is near the pre-opening close and may be retested before the upcoming earnings release. That is when the real catalyst will be unveiled: Q3 guidance, in which Helios rack-scale systems will be sold.

The squeeze was orchestrated by a pair of hedge funds that effectively gained control of the entire float. Through stock and swaps, Pentwater Capital and SRS Investment Management controlled more than 80% of the float in a stock already carrying 13% short interest.
As a result, there were essentially no shares available for shorts to cover, and the resulting feedback loop pushed the stock up more than 500%. Like most short squeezes, the trade quickly unwound, and CAR shares are back in the low $200s. 3 Stocks With High Short Interest That Could Squeeze Next
A true short squeeze requires three elements: a high level of short interest, a lengthy days-to-cover period, and a catalyst that can ignite a rally.
High short interest, combined with more than 5 days to cover, can create a difficult environment for short sellers trying to locate shares to close their positions. And when shorts are scrambling to cover while buyers pour in, that’s when the short-squeeze feedback loop really takes hold. Here are three stocks that fit those criteria.
Groupon: Clean Short Squeeze Setup With Upcoming Earnings Catalyst
Online discount marketplace Groupon Inc. (NASDAQ: GRPN) is always a popular short-squeeze candidate thanks to its earnings volatility and its general inability to turn revenue into profit.
But heavily shorted stocks often provide brief windows of opportunity, and Groupon has the classic short-squeeze setup traders often look for.
First, GRPN has more than 50% of its float sold short, up more than 5% from the previous month. The stock started the year with about 40% of the float sold short, so this marks an acceleration from earlier levels. And crucially, shorts would need roughly 11.3 days to cover under average trading volume, creating a lengthy window for a short squeeze to develop.
