Margaret Mitchell

Margaret Mitchell (1900–1949) was an American novelist and journalist who became a global literary sensation following the publication of her 1936 epic, Gone with the Wind. Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Mitchell drew heavily from the stories of the American Civil War she heard during her youth to craft her narrative. Her single lifetime novel became one of the best-selling books in history, earning her the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1937 and inspiring the 1939 film adaptation that remains a cornerstone of cinematic history.

Beyond her literary success, Mitchell was a trailblazer in journalism, working as a feature writer for the Atlanta Journal Sunday Magazine starting in 1922. Using the byline “Peggy Mitchell,” she broke social barriers as one of the few women in the South writing for a major daily newspaper, producing over 100 articles and interviews. Interestingly, she only began writing her famous novel as a way to pass the time while recovering from a broken ankle that had forced her to resign from her reporting career.
