The IRA Rules Are Tricky (What You Need To Know)

Lithium Extraction Hasn’t Changed Since 1850

The way the world gets its lithium is embarrassing.

They dig massive ponds in the desert. Pump brine into them. Then wait. For up to 18 months. While the sun slowly evaporates the water. In the end, just 30% of the lithium is recovered.

With lithium demand set to grow 5X by 2040, EnergyX has the answer. Their patented tech recovers 98% of lithium at speeds 500X faster than evaporation ponds.

General Motors already invested. Join them as an early-stage EnergyX shareholder today.

Bob CarlsonIn last week’s Retirement Watch Weekly, I shared some oversights and missed opportunities that can easily trigger unnecessary taxes.

I get a lot of reader questions about IRAs and taxes, so to help all of us get on the same page, let’s today cover more costly mistakes to recognize and avoid…

Non-traditional investments

Some assets can’t be owned by IRAs. Other assets can be owned only in some circumstances.

What’s more, there are prohibited transactions regarding retirement accounts you must be aware of. And the details of these rules are tricky.

For example, your IRA can own real estate, but not if there’s a mortgage or other debt involved. Your IRA can own a small business, but not if it pays you a salary or other compensation.

Don’t add unconventional investments or strategies to your IRA without good advice or studying the rules very closely.

Charitable giving opportunities

Charitably inclined people often leave a lot of money on the table by not making their gifts through IRAs.

There are benefits for gifts made both during life and through your estate.

The qualified charitable distribution (QCD) for IRA owners at least age 70½ has been permanent since 2015.

Eligible IRA owners can direct their custodians to distribute money to the charity or charities of their choice.

The donations up to $100,000 annually aren’t included in gross income, and the IRA owner doesn’t receive a deduction.

The QCD counts toward any RMD for the year. For those who are charitably inclined, it’s probably the best way for someone age 70½ or older to make charitable donations.

When you plan to make donations through your estate, consider naming the charities as IRA beneficiaries instead of giving other assets in your estate.

The charity takes the distribution from the IRA. Neither it nor the estate owes income taxes.

When individuals, such as your spouse or children, inherit an IRA, the distributions are taxable to them in the same way they would have been taxable to you.

But when they inherit non-IRA assets, they increase the tax basis to the current fair market value.

They can sell appreciated assets and not owe any income taxes.

It’s a backdoor that almost any investor can use, ahead of the June 12 IPO – putting them into position to cash out when SpaceX launches. For details on how to buy SpaceX’s June IPO today, click here now.CLICK HERE…RMD errors

A few years ago, the IRS decided to examine Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) more closely, because people make a lot of errors with them.

When you don’t take an RMD, the penalty is 50% of the amount that should have been distributed as an RMD but wasn’t.

Some people don’t know about Required Minimum Distributions, so they don’t take them.

Many others miscalculate their RMDs or don’t optimize the way they take RMDs.

Waiting too long to plan for RMDs

Some people have large IRAs they consider to be primarily emergency funds and money to be left to their heirs.

Often these people are surprised at how RMDs escalate over the years.

The percentage of the IRA that must be distributed increases each year.

This triggers higher income taxes that could have been avoided. If you have a large IRA, plan for RMDs early.

Though RMDs aren’t required until age 72, the earlier you plan how to deal with a large IRA and its future RMDs, the more options you have.

Among the strategies we’ve discussed in the past are emptying the IRA early, converting to a Roth IRA, buying qualified longevity annuity contracts, using the IRA to establish a family bank and turning the IRA into a charitable remainder trust.

Avoiding the 10-year rule

The Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement Act enacted at the end of 2019 ended the Stretch IRA.

Now, most non-spouses who inherit an IRA must distribute the entire IRA within 10 years. Even Roth IRAs must be depleted within 10 years.

This means the tax-deferred compounding of the IRA can’t be extended for decades.

The beneficiaries must pay income taxes on distributions from traditional IRAs within 10 years.

That often results in higher lifetime income taxes than when the distributions could have been stretched out over a longer period.

Fortunately, many of the strategies for reducing taxes on lifetime RMDs also are ideal strategies for planning around the 10-year rule and the end of the Stretch IRA.

You can empty the IRA early, convert a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA, or reposition the IRA as a charitable remainder trust or a permanent life insurance policy. To a better retirement,

Proverbs 13:10 – How Pride Fuels Endless Quarrels and How God Guides Us to Peace

Proverbs 13:10

(10) Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.
King James Version   Change email Bible version

Only through pride does contention last. We primarily see the effects of pride because pride is frequently difficult to detect. God has shown in His Word how to detect it: by looking at the fruits. How do we know false prophets? By their fruits, by what they produce.

A quarrel that could be easily settled if both parties were humble continues indefinitely when parties are arrogant. Why? Because pride plows the way for contempt for the others opinion. Pride inflames passion and wounds feelings. Because of competitiveness, also an aspect of pride, a person feels he has to fight back. And so the argument goes back and forth.

If we are ever involved in a quarrel that seemingly will not end, we should be well-advised from God’s Word that the problem is pride. It is somewhere in the picture in one or both who are participating in the conflict. The quarrel will never end until one person makes up his mind to stop it by refusing to argue back, suppressing the feeling that he must win.

One of the greatest spiritual advances that I ever made in my life was when it suddenly dawned on me one day that I did not have to win. God is on His throne, and because He loves me and the other person, God will make available to both of us what the right decision is. If we ask patiently, persevering without anger, and if we continue to meditate and search and counsel with Him, the answer will come. So, arguments stop.

Academy Day

Service Academy Day Showcases America’s Next Generation of Leaders

This week, I was honored to host the annual Military Academy Day in Goodyear and met with an outstanding group of young Americans interested in pursuing appointments to our nation’s prestigious United States Service Academies. I want to sincerely thank all the students, parents and families who took the time to attend and learn more about the congressional nomination process.

Every year, I am deeply impressed by the caliber, character and determination of the students seeking to serve our country through military service. These young men and women represent the very best of America — motivated, disciplined and committed to something greater than themselves. Their willingness to challenge themselves academically, physically and mentally in pursuit of serving our nation is inspiring.

Admission to a service academy is highly competitive and requires extraordinary dedication, leadership and perseverance. Those who earn appointments will receive a world-class education while preparing to become the next generation of military officers defending our freedoms and protecting the American people.

One of the greatest honors of serving in Congress is having the opportunity to nominate exceptional young Americans who are willing to answer the call to service. I have no doubt that many of the students I met this week have bright futures ahead of them as leaders in our Armed Forces.

I also want to give special recognition to the parents and families supporting these students every step of the way. Their encouragement, sacrifice and guidance play a critical role in helping these young people achieve success, and they deserve tremendous praise.

Finally, we owe immense gratitude to the brave men and women currently serving in our military, whose sacrifices make opportunities like these possible and continue to safeguard the freedoms we cherish as Americans.

China

Border Agents Stop Another Dangerous Illegal Crossing

This week, Border Patrol agents intercepted six Chinese nationals classified as “special interest” illegal aliens attempting to sneak across our southern border disguised in construction gear. Thankfully, law enforcement officers stopped them before they could disappear into the interior of the United States.

As a border-state Congressman, I have warned for years that Joe Biden’s reckless open-border policies created a massive national security crisis. When you leave the border wide open for millions of illegal crossings, you have no idea who is entering the country, what their intentions are, or who may be exploiting the chaos.

Now ask yourself: why would Chinese nationals be attempting to illegally enter the United States through the southern border in the first place?

This is exactly why securing the border matters.

I commend the brave Border Patrol agents and law enforcement officials working tirelessly to protect our communities despite years of political sabotage from the previous administration. Their work is making a difference as President Trump restores law and order at the border and shuts down the dangerous catch-and-release policies that fueled this crisis.

Arizona communities have lived with the consequences of an unsecured border for far too long. Americans deserve a government that puts national security first, enforces immigration law, and knows exactly who is entering our country.

Under President Trump, we are finally returning to policies that prioritize the safety and sovereignty of the American people.  Side note: the Democrats in Congress continue to oppose efforts to fund our Border Patrol and ICE agents.

Hoover

Hoover Dam Shines Bright as a Monument to American Greatness

One of the greatest engineering achievements in American history is once again serving as a proud symbol of patriotism and national unity. As part of the America250 celebration honoring our nation’s 250th birthday, a massive American flag now hangs proudly across the iconic Hoover Dam — illuminated each evening in brilliant red, white, and blue.

Built during the Great Depression by hardworking American laborers, Hoover Dam remains a towering reminder of what our country can accomplish through grit, vision, and determination. Millions of visitors from around the world travel to Arizona and Nevada each year to witness this marvel of engineering firsthand.

I encourage every Arizonan to make time to visit Hoover Dam and experience this breathtaking tribute to our nation. Whether you are seeing the Colorado River carving through Black Canyon, learning about the history of the dam, or watching Old Glory shine against the desert sky, it is a powerful reminder that America’s best days are always ahead when we remain united in love of country.

The Hoover Dam is more than concrete and steel — it is a monument to American exceptionalism. 🇺🇸 🎇

Washed-Up Activists Boycott America’s 250th Celebration

Speaking of America’s 250th birthday, apparently celebrating it has become too offensive for parts of the entertainment industry. This week, several aging performers and Hollywood-adjacent activists announced they would no longer participate in Freedom 250 eventsconnected to President Trump’s effort to commemorate our nation’s founding.

The media reacted as though modern music royalty had staged a dramatic protest. In reality, many Americans were left wondering whether these acts still even perform anywhere outside nostalgia tours and casino lounges. Most of these entertainers have not had a meaningful hit in decades, but suddenly we are expected to believe their boycott is some major cultural turning point.

The real story is not about music. It is about the Left’s growing hostility toward patriotism and the millions of Americans who proudly support President Trump. These celebrities never object when entertainers campaign for Democrats, headline liberal fundraisers, or waste speeches at the Grammys attacking conservatives. But participating in an event celebrating America’s founding? That suddenly becomes unacceptable if conservatives are involved.

This is the modern entertainment industry in a nutshell. Singers who once built careers entertaining audiences now see themselves as political activists first and performers second. Instead of bringing Americans together, they use every stage and spotlight to push partisan outrage and sneer at traditional American values.

Meanwhile, ordinary Americans are excited to celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday, honor our veterans, teach the next generation about our history, and recognize the freedoms that make this country exceptional. President Trump’s Freedom 250 initiative is about pride in America’s future and gratitude for the sacrifices that built this nation.

The truth is simple: Americans want entertainers who sing songs, not give lectures. And despite Hollywood’s endless political tantrums, patriotism remains far more popular than celebrity activism.

Bruce

Bruce Springsteen Proves the Entertainment Industry Still Doesn’t Get It

In related nonsense from the entertainment industry, Bruce Springsteen took the stage in Washington, D.C. this week and delivered exactly what Americans have come to expect from today’s celebrity class: another vile political sermon disguised as entertainment.

Fans who paid to hear music instead received another anti-Trump lecture from a leftist rock star who long ago traded blue-collar storytelling for predictable partisan activism. Apparently, modern concerts are no longer about performing songs. They are campaign rallies for the radical Left with guitars in the background.

As I noted above, Springsteen’s comments came just days after several entertainers publicly withdrew from America’s 250th anniversary events because they could not tolerate participating in anything connected to President Trump. Together, these incidents perfectly capture the mindset dominating much of Hollywood and the music industry today: if patriotism involves conservatives, they want no part of it.

Of course, the media never complains when celebrities openly campaign for Democrats or mock Republicans and traditional American values. That behavior is celebrated as “speaking truth to power.” But when Americans gather to celebrate the founding of the United States, suddenly entertainers act as though patriotism itself is controversial.

Many of these celebrities became famous singing about hardworking Americans, freedom, and opportunity. Yet now they lecture everyday citizens from multimillion-dollar stages while looking down on the very people who buy their albums and concert tickets.

Most Americans are tired of being preached to by entertainers who think fame makes them political philosophers. People attend concerts to escape politics, enjoy music, and spend time with family and friends — not to hear another recycled anti-Trump speech from someone desperate to remain culturally relevant.

The American people still love this country, still believe in freedom, and still take pride in our history. No amount of celebrity outrage is going to change that.

NY Giants

The Left’s Sports Hypocrisy Is Impossible to Ignore

But wait, there’s more: the same double standard infecting Hollywood and the music industry has completely taken over professional sports and sports media as well.

For years, Democrats and the corporate sports press demanded that athletes become political activists. When liberal stars attack conservatives, endorse Democrat candidates, or turn interviews and championship celebrations into political rallies, the media applauds them as courageous role models.

But the moment an athlete expresses support for President Trump or appears at a conservative event, the outrage machine activates instantly.

That hypocrisy was exposed once again this week after New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart faced criticism simply for appearing alongside President Trump. The same commentators who spent years insisting athletes should “use their platform” suddenly decided sports and politics should never mix after all.

Apparently, political activism is only acceptable when it benefits Democrats.

Americans have watched this charade for years. LeBron James campaigns for Democrats and the media calls it leadership. Entire leagues promote left-wing political messaging and corporate sponsors celebrate it as social progress. Coaches, commentators, and athletes attack conservatives openly and are rewarded with glowing coverage.

But if a conservative athlete speaks positively about faith, patriotism, border security, or America First policies, the sports media reacts like a constitutional crisis has unfolded. This has never been about keeping politics out of sports. It has always been about policing which political opinions are allowed.

The Fake News wants conservative athletes intimidated into silence while liberal athletes are elevated as heroes. They do not want fairness or neutrality. They want ideological conformity.

The American people see through it.

Athletes are citizens. They do not surrender their constitutional rights because reporters, activists, or corporate executives dislike their beliefs. They are free to support whichever politicians and causes they choose, just like every other American.

What truly frustrates the Left is that more athletes, entertainers, and everyday citizens are refusing to bow their knees to the cultural gatekeepers who spent years trying to control what Americans are allowed to say, support, or believe.

Their outrage is not rooted in principle.  It is rooted in partisanship and Americans are done pretending otherwise.

Accounts

Trump Accounts Give America’s Children a Financial Head Start

This week marked the official rollout of the new Trump Accounts mobile app, giving parents an easy new way to manage and monitor savings accounts designed to help America’s children build a stronger financial future from the very beginning.

Nearly six million eligible children already have Trump Accounts established, each receiving a $1,000 federal contribution to help jumpstart their long-term savings and investment potential. Families can also contribute up to $5,000 annually into the accounts, creating a practical tool to help parents plan ahead for their children’s future.

With the newly launched app now available in both the Apple and Google app stores, parents can directly manage accounts and track contributions from their phones.

This initiative is about giving hardworking American families more tools to save, invest, and think long-term. At a time when inflation and rising costs continue to pressure household budgets, Republicans are focused on policies that help families build opportunity and financial security for the next generation.

Every child deserves the chance to begin life with a stronger financial foundation. Instead of placing more barriers in front of working families, Republicans are working to put more financial control directly into the hands of parents.

I encourage eligible families to explore the program and learn how Trump Accounts can help provide their children with a meaningful head start for the future.
