How rare is the year of the foiled no-hitter?

Monday, September 08View OnlineWelcome to The Pregame Lineup, a weekday newsletter that gets you up to speed on everything you need to know for today’s games, while catching you up on fun and interesting stories you might have missed. Thanks for being here. Another near miss, another reminder: MLB is still searching for its first no-hitter of the season.

Dodgers ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto became the latest pitcher to fall just short on Saturday night at Camden Yards, losing his bid for a no-noagainst the Orioles with two outs in the ninth inning on Jackson Holliday’s wall-scraping solo homer to right-center field. As if that wasn’t enough, Yamamoto didn’t even get the win — the right-hander exited after Holliday’s dinger and watched the bullpen cough up three more runs in the O’s 4-3 walk-off victory.

A no-hitter from Yamamoto on Saturday would have been particularly notable, considering only two Japanese-born hurlers — Hideo Nomo twice and Hisashi Iwakuma once — have done it. Coincidentally, Nomo threw the only no-no in the history of Camden Yards (which opened in 1992) while pitching for the Red Sox in 2001.

It’s now been more than a year since MLB’s last no-hitter — a combo effort by the Cubs on Sept. 4, 2024. The last solo no-no came on Aug. 2, 2024, when Blake Snell (now Yamamoto’s teammate on the Dodgers) accomplished the feat for the Giants against the Reds

In 2025, we’ve seen nine pitchers carry a no-hit bid through seven innings, and three of those pitchers — the Reds’ Nick Martinez on June 27, the Guardians’ Gavin Williams on Aug. 6 and Yamamoto on Saturday — have completed eight innings with their no-no intact. But no one has been able to finish the job.

Baseball fans have been spoiled in recent years when it comes to no-hitters, with 39 no-nos (including 10 combos) taking place across MLB since 2015. As our own Theo DeRosa details here, this would be the first season without a no-hitter in 20 years, and just the fifth such season in the Divisional Era (since 1969). Of course, the season isn’t over yet. The clock is ticking, but there’s still time left for someone to end the drought. — Thomas Harrigan GAMES OF THE NIGHTRoyals at Guardians (6:40 p.m. ET, FREE on MLB.TV): Just a half-game separates these AL Central rivals entering a key four-game set in Cleveland that could throw a wrench into the Wild Card chase. The Royals have a minuscule edge in the standings, but the Guardians lead the season series, 5-4, with just these four remaining. Royals rookie Ryan Bergert, picked up from the Padres at the Trade Deadline, has allowed two runs or fewer in each of his six starts with K.C.Mets at Phillies (6:45 p.m. ET, MLB.TV and MLB Network): The Phillies may have a comfortable lead atop the NL East, but the Mets have had their bitter rival’s number since Francisco Lindor’s slam ousted them from last year’s postseason. New York has won seven of nine meetings this year and hands tonight’s start to its most dependable starter from the last few weeks, rookie Nolan McLean. NL hits leader Trea Turner (right hamstring strain) and Alec Bohm (cyst in left shoulder) are headed to the IL for the Phils as they enter a stretch of 10 straight games against contenders.D-backs at Giants (9:45 p.m. ET, MLB.TV and FS1): Post-Deadline runs have vaulted both of these clubs into the NL Wild Card picture, but only the periphery; the loser of this three-game set may find itself looking ahead to 2026. Corbin Carroll has fueled the D-backs’ push with a career-best 24-game on-base streak, while the Giants have won five of Logan Webb’s last six starts. Webb, who has paced the NL in innings each year since 2023, will swipe the Major League lead from Tarik Skubal with a couple frames tonight. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT• Edwin Díaz was teetering on the edge: bases loaded, one out in the ninth, a one-run lead to protect and Elly De La Cruz at the plate. Then he realized what was wrong. He had to change his shoes.

• Rich Hill tied Edwin Jackson’s MLB record by pitching for the 14th teamof his long career earlier this year, but they might soon have some company. José Ureña has pitched for five teams this year alone (all in different divisions!), tying another MLB record, and bringing the grand total for his career up to 11. The righty only turns 34 on Friday, so he’s certainly got some more runway to catch up.

• Don Sutton, you’re on notice. The Hall of Famer is next in Justin Verlander’s march up the all-time strikeout list after the 42-year-old passed Gaylord Perry on Saturday to claim eighth place with 3,536 K’s. Does he have 39 more punchouts in him over the next three weeks to pass Sutton?

• Speaking of Hall of Famers with records about to fall, Mickey Mantle’s 64-year-old mark for homers in a season by a switch-hitter is in serious jeopardy after Cal Raleigh pulled one shy of the Mick with his 53rd dinger yesterday in Atlanta. A day earlier, Big Dumper hit his 42nd big fly of the year while in the lineup at catcher, tying the MLB record set by Javy Lopez in 2003. LOOK OUT BELOW!After taking two of three from the Braves over the weekend, the Mariners have a more comfortable grip on the final AL Wild Card spot, but multiple teams have positioned themselves as comeback candidates in the race. The Rangers have won eight of 11 and enter tonight just 1 1/2 games behind Seattle in the Wild Card standings, while the Royals sit two back after winning three of their past four. The Guardians, meanwhile, are 2 1/2 back after having won four of five. But which of these teams has the best shot to earn that final Wild Card spot? Let’s rank ’em. Mariners: The bats erupted over the weekend, outscoring the Braves 28-4 over their final two games thanks to TWO five-homer showings. The Mariners seem to have regained their footing after a four-game losing streak had their fans preparing for a late-season letdown. Seattle is back home this week for series against the Cardinals and Angels. Royals: Kansas City is 15-10 since Aug. 11, MLB’s second-best winning percentage in that stretch. But the biggest reason they can make noise is because they’re the only one of these Wild Card chasers still with games left vs. Seattle. The Royals host the Mariners from Sept. 16-18, an excellent opportunity to make up ground. Before that, though, they have four in Cleveland and three in Philadelphia this weekend. Rangers: Texas got back into the race with a six-game winning streak from late August into September but is just 2-3 since. Things don’t get much easier from here for the Rangers: They open the week with a three-game home series against the powerful Brewers, then visit the Mets and Astros before their schedule lets up considerably.  Guardians: Despite some modest winning streaks this year, the Guardians’ best month came in April, which they finished 15-11. Since then, they haven’t ended any month better than 14-12. Should they win or sweep their series with the Royals, perhaps it can be the beginning of a run that pushes them over the hump. — Jason Foster REMEMBERING DAVEYLeading the legendarily talented and volatile 1986 Mets to a World Series title might be what Davey Johnson was best known for, but it really only scratches the surface of how much the brilliant tactician and vastly underrated player brought to the game.

The slick-fielding second baseman, who won three Gold Gloves and two World Series with the Orioles and once set a record for second basemen with 43 homers in a season, passed away Saturday at the age of 82.

As a manager, Johnson had few peers when it came to turning around ballclubs, but he was decades ahead of his time analytically even as a player. In 1969, while taking a grad school course, he used computers at Johns Hopkins University to come up with the Orioles’ optimal batting order.

Happens to the best of us.

But the Mariners have a solution for Pacific Northwest fans: A 3-Day Giveaway! From tonight through Wednesday, the first 10,000 fans can take home a Logan Gilbert POP! Collectible before each game of the Cardinals-Mariners series.

Change How Your Brain
Ages in a Matter of Days
Dear Reader,In 2 Weeks to a Younger Brain, you’ll see how easy it is to boost your cognitive abilities and stave off or reverse brain aging. You can sharpen your memory again. Think faster and better. Improve your mood and relieve anxiety.Plus, these techniques are so powerful, research shows that what you learn in just two short weeks may keep your memory performing at peak efficiency for the next 5-10 years.Scientific findings show that those as young as 20 can already have memory issues. And subtle brain changes associated with mental decline can be observed by age 40.So if you find yourself misplacing your keys or glasses . . .If you find yourself forgetting someone’s name — or a word that’s “on the tip of your tongue” . . .There’s no time to waste.Memory slips, or “senior moments,” result from the wear and tear of aging on your brain. This wear and tear comes from oxidative stress, inflammation, and other chemical alterations that deteriorate your brain and nerve cells. These mental lapses can be terrifying, particularly after age 40. You may wonder (and rightly so) if YOU could be on a downward spiral toward Alzheimer’s.The good news is that while our brains do gradually age, you possess the ability to slow, stop, and often reverse the brain aging process. The key?The Alzheimer’s Association reports that over 5 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s today. About half a million people die each year from this horrific disease. But our Mind Health Report team at Newsmax Health wanted answers to questions like these:Because memory loss and Alzheimer’s have truly reached epidemic proportions in this country, Newsmax Health wants to give their health-oriented readers the chance to pick up a FREE copy of 2 Weeks to a Younger Brain. You’ll find brain-boosting discoveries to help you with:Clear thinkingSteady, stable moodLaser-focused attentionStronger memoryBetter problem-solving abilityGreat visual and spatial skillsMore satisfying relationshipsThis book translates the latest brain science into practical strategies and exercises with quick and long-lasting benefits — and not only for your memory. These very same strategies also will reduce your risk for heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, other major killers. You see, lifestyle habits affect your brain more than your genes do. Take stress, for example. Those Under Chronic Stress Increase Their Risk for Developing Alzheimer’s diseaseWhen you get your book, you’ll hear about a Swedish study that evaluated the brain effects of stress in over 1,000 women for 35 years. Investigators found that subjects with more stress during middle age had higher risks for Alzheimer’s later in life, along with more brain abnormalities. What’s more, these researchers also found that the number and duration of midlife stressors were independently linked to dementia risk later in life. So those with more stressors (such as divorce or loss of a job) would be more likely to develop dementia than those with fewer stressors.Other studies indicate that those prone to stress are three times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s compared to those with better coping skills. The good news is that, despite the stress you face today, you can learn how to protect your brain from long-term damage with the simple stress-busting tools you’ll find in this book.In this book, 2 Weeks to a Younger Brain, you’ll find:How listening to music can improve your mental abilities . . .The little-known connection between sex and growing new memory cells in the brain . . .Two simple techniques to help you remember names, faces, and where you put things such as your glasses or keys . . .How sharpening your visual skills will help your memory . . .The most common cause of forgetting things (it’s not what you think) . . .The effects of depression, anxiety, and sleep problems on your memory and brain function . . .What science says about multitasking and brain health (particularly important if you use your computer or other electronic devices throughout the day) . . .Easy mental workouts for brain fitness and raising your IQ . . .How those extra pounds can prematurely age your brain . . .And that’s not all. You’ll also discover:How to train your brain to sleep better . . .Why you need to cross-train your brain to energize different brain regions . . .How to use simple online computer searches to build your brain muscles . . .Why delaying retirement by just a few years can reduce your risk for dementia . . .Simple tips to make exercising fun and pain-free . . .How coffee and alcohol can lower your risk for Alzheimer’s (see how much you should drink) . . .How to choose the right friends and social connections that will actually help you live longer . . .Medications you should know about that help or hurt your brain . . .Brain-healthy diet and supplement tips (including simple menu options) . . .Plus much, much more . . .Get your FREE copy of 2 Weeks to a Younger Brain with this special offer.Dedicated to your healthy mind and brain,

Ashwagandha Improves Hypothyroidism

Breaking News from Newsmax.comAshwagandha Improves HypothyroidismDr. Russell Blaylock, M.D., writes: The herb ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), also called Indian ginseng, has a number of useful properties, including improving memory and obsessive-compulsive disorder, preventing neurodegeneration, and benefiting immunity. It also has anticancer properties. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 50 people with subclinical hypothyroidism (mild hypothyroidism that is not clinically recognized), researchers found that ashwagandha improved objective measures of thyroid function significantly in all the subjects.Special: Millions Suffer From Chronic Conditions — Don’t Know It’s Their Thyroid This is significant because a large number of people suffer from hypothyroidism but are rarely diagnosed by physicians who do not understand subclinical conditions, and only look for obvious cases.Ashwagandha not only corrects the condition, it also protects the brain and improves mood.Dr. Russell Blaylock, M.D., is editor of The Blaylock Wellness Report and a nationally recognized board-certified neurosurgeon, health practitioner, author, and lecturer.More Links:• Stress Impacts Your Heart — Now There’s Something You Can Do About It• The 5 Early Warning Signs of Prostate Cancer

Urgent Message From Dr. David Brownstein, MDOne of your body’s tiniest glands — it’s located in your neck just above the Adam’s apple — is your thyroid. It may be small and not look important but it’s one of the most powerful glands in the whole body, secreting hormones that are involved in just about every crucial function that takes place in your body — heart, digestion, brain function, and more! So, it should not surprise you to learn that if this tiny thyroid of yours is just a little off and not working at 100 percent — your whole world could turn upside down!Thyroid LocationSadly, I have discovered in my medical practice so many of patients struggle with conditions that are rooted in their thyroid — and they don’t even know it!In fact, many conventional doctors just prescribe tons of prescription drugs that mask and suppress symptoms but never fix the underlying problem of the thyroid.Shockingly, many doctors don’t even bother to test to see if the thyroid is functioning at optimal levels. If you have experienced unusual fatigue, rapid weight gain or loss that you can’t seem to fix, frequent mood swings, sudden hair loss, unusual heart problems, sleepless nights, frequent bathroom visits, even bouts of agitation and you find your hands trembling — all of these problems may be linked to your thyroid. Many of my patients dismiss these symptoms as nothing more than “age-related” problems. “Completely normal for my age,” they will say. And, to top it all off, many of my medical colleagues and even your doctor may have overlooked some vital aspects of your blood results, ranking your thyroid as “normal” when it really isn’t. But they are often wrong! And the longer these signs are ignored, the more intense your health problems will become and worse you will feel.Fortunately, I developed a solution! As a medical doctor, I have observed this happen with my patients for so many years I knew I needed to provide help.Patients come in with signs of thyroid imbalance and they have been to doctor after doctor looking for real relief.About Dr. Brownstein David Brownstein, M.D., is medical director at Michigan’s respected Center for Holistic Medicine. He specializes in such conditions as thyroid disease, chronic fatigue, arthritis, hormone imbalance, diabetes, and many others. And here is the surprising truth: Many times patients can be cured just by getting simple nutrients they are missing into their body — nutrients that cause no side effects and can radically change the way they feel. After seeing so many cases like this, I decided to take matters into my own hands. So I created a formula containing these simple nutrients that my patients could take to fix their thyroid problems and feel better once and for all.My formula is not something I slapped together in a big rush.It came after years of intense research, and treating thousands of patients.Only then did I join with Medix Select, one of the nation&rsuo;s premier nutraceutical companies, to make an effective product for my patients and people like you. This amazing product is called Actalin®.Well, since my formula Actalin was launched in 2013, Medix has sold more than 350,000 bottles — it’s most popular nutritional supplement. My patients and others have never been happier because they saw their lives turn around!Get a FREE Supply of Actalin to Try It — Click Here Nowcouple bikingNow You Can Benefit From Actalin!First of all, it’s a new natural breakthrough containing 17 hand-picked ingredients to specifically target your optimal thyroid health, along with your adrenal health and general wellness.Heading the list of ingredients in Actalin, I added 200 mcg of iodine, or 133% of the recommended value, in each daily serving.Iodine is critical for production of adequate thyroid hormones. In fact, you need three iodine molecules to produce the T3 hormone and four iodine molecules to produce the T4 thyroid hormone.T3 and T4 are the two key hormones produced by the thyroid gland — and they are absolutely critical for hundreds of body functions, including your heart, brain, and immune system. Many people think they get enough iodine by adding or eating salty foods. But they are wrong — I have found most of my patients are woefully deprived of iodine! It’s Not Just IodineSo when you take Actalin daily, you’ll help cover your bases when it comes to this crucial nutrient. But that’s not all you’ll find …This advanced thyroid support formula also includes support for your overtaxed adrenal glands, with a proprietary blend that includes adrenal glandular powder. You see, the adrenals are closely associated with your thyroid — especially your energy levels and immune system response. When your adrenal glands are performing at their peak, you’ll be astonished at how wonderful you feel. Many supplements ignore the adrenals and their important function. Not Actalin! And there’s more …My proprietary blend also includes a trio of herbs used for centuries in the Ayurvedic tradition to naturally and gently stimulate the thyroid gland.ayurvedic herbsYou’ll find these Ayurvedic herbs:Ashwagandha Root Extract has been used for thousands of years to help gently balance out the body’s endocrine functions and also promote mental clarity and alertness.Forskohlii Root Extract has been used traditionally to help support thyroid health.Guggul Gum Resin Extract has been used by Ayurvedic practitioners for thousands of years to support thyroid function. So Actalin includes iodine, adrenal support, and gentle natural balancers for your thyroid. And that’s just the beginning …I also added L-tyrosine, methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), and 10 additional vitamins and mineralsto support your good thyroid health. My patients say Actalin really works for them.Don’t believe me or them! Just Try Actalin With Our Free Offer — Go Here for DetailsAmong these additional minerals is selenium, and after iodine, it could well be the next most important mineral affecting thyroid function. Selenium is more concentrated in the thyroid gland than in any other organ in the human body, so it plays a crucial role in thyroid function. In Actalin, you’ll also find MSM or methylsulfonylmethane, an organic source of bioavailable sulfur. This sulfur compound provides support to the thyroid.Zinc is also needed to support the conversion of T4 to the more active T3 hormone, so insufficient zinc can prevent your thyroid from making enough active thyroid hormone.Copper and another trace mineral, manganese, help protect your thyroid from free radicals.Sufficient quantities of vitamin D within body cells are required for the thyroid hormone to function properly.Vitamin E is another antioxidant nutrient with a beneficial effect on thyroid function, exerting a protective influence against thyroid cell damage.Vitamin A also helps to balance the correct amount of thyroid hormones.Magnesium is another mineral that helps regulate thyroid function, and is required for conversion of T4 to T3.Niacin and riboflavin are B-complex vitamins that regulate thyroid activity and contribute to the prevention of either an overactive or underactive thyroid.Well, I could go on in much more detail about the benefits to you of all 17 of the targeted hand-picked ingredients in Actalin, but the fact is that you don’t know how it will work unless you try it.The exclusive formula in Actalin could change your life.Go directly to our FREE offer order page — Go Here Now.Healthy Thyroid Special ReportAs you know, I have spent years researching thyroid concerns — and I am confident that Actalin will help you maintain a healthy thyroid. In fact, I’m so confident that Actalin will make you feel so much better that I persuaded its distributor, Medix Select, to let YOU try it out for yourself. That’s right … You have the opportunity to claim your own supply of Actalin and put it to the test. With this special offer, Medix Select will send you a $39.95 bottle of Actalin FREE as part of our RISK-FREE OFFER (you pay just a small shipping charge).Simply click the button below to get your bottle of Actalin rushed to you.You will also receive A Doctor’s Guide to a Healthy Thyroid FREE (another $20.00 value).
